About Iain Abernethy

Iain needs no introduction. He travels the world leading martial arts seminars and is one of the world's leading exponents of applied karate. "Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts recorded in the traditional kata. Iain’s seminars, books, DVDs and articles have proved to be very popular with those groups and individuals who wish to practice their arts as the pragmatic systems they were originally intended to be." You can learn more about him here: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/

We are excited to have Iain join us from England virtually as he will not be traveling to the USA or Canada for the foreseeable future.

About Donnie Abel

How's it going? I'm Donnie Abel, the creator of MAI and this year's Martial Arts Retreat host. I help martial artists prevent and recover from injuries with online content and private sessions. I created Martial Arts Intelligence to provide martial artists of all styles the knowledge and techniques they need to overcome any obstacle standing in their way of a strong practice.

I have been involved in martial arts and body work my whole life: functional fitness, physical rehabilitation and physical therapy and I currently hold a 5th degree black belt (godan).  I have also been working in the physical therapy world for over 20 years with athletes for sports training and assisting with preventative education to avoid orthopedic injuries.

I'm looking forward to working with you at this year's event. Come prepared to transform your challenges, injuries, and any thing else standing in your way of achieving your MA goals.

Details

The theme for Iain’s section of this year’s event will be the bunkai of Kanku-Sho! Iain’s view is that this kata represents Anko Itou’s alternative expression of the combative principles of Kanku-Dai (Kushanku) such that exact duplication with his Heian / Pinan series is avoided. The session is therefore sure to be of interest to all practitioners of Kushanku / Kosokun / Kanku-Dai; as well as those who practise Kanku-Sho. The bunkai and drills covered will include escapes, neck cranks, chokes, takedowns, locks, methods of last resort, etc. General bunkai and combative principles will also be discussed throughout. The live video link will also mean Iain and see everything that is happening and that he will be able to answer all questions directly and in real time.

Donnie will be covering Martial Arts Intelligence techniques that complement the bunkai of Kanku-Sho from punching mechanics to prevent shoulder injuries to generating power for Kanku-Sho with proper breathing mechanics. He will also be offering a bonus class on Sunday morning covering rehabilitation and relaxation and answering questions about your martial arts challenges.
